Learn to Tango

Learning to dance the Argentine Tango is a challenging, yet extremely rewarding experience that takes time and determination to master. Just as with any body technique, it can only be learned if practiced on a regular basis—at least two hours per week, every week, although more than that will reap you greater rewards more quickly.

We offer two different paths to learn to dance the Tango—group lessons and one-to-one private classes. Read on for more information about the levels in our group lessons.

Group lessons

People from all walks of life come to our group lessons to learn and perfect their Tango. Our group lessons are not just academic; you will discover a fun and vibrant social club and an unrivaled atmosphere.

It is very easy to start learning Tango with us. A partner is not necessary for any group lesson and you don't need any special clothes or shoes—at least initially. We will advise you on safe and correct footwear, and when you are ready, you can purchase a pair of Tango shoes from our large range.

The quality of tuition in group lessons is of the same standard as in private tuition, but with less individual attention. We have group lessons four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, see our group lessons page), with a variety of levels and topics.

Beginner level

This course will cover all the basic techniques and moves necessary for further progression in Tango studies over ten lessons. During this course, you may also want to attend the improver/technique lessons on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 7:45–8:45pm, which will provide you with extra knowledge and confidence.

The material will be repeated throughout the course so you will not miss anything if you enter the course at any point; you will be integrated into the class and brought up to date with the course material. The curriculum is designed to teach you a set of Argentine Tango fundamentals over a course of ten lessons, taking you to the next level.

The beginner Tango course takes place four evenings a week:

The course is flexible, and though you may take one beginner lesson per week, for ten weeks, you may prefer attending all four beginner lessons per week or any other combination instead, on either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening. To truly master the fundamentals rapidly, you would benefit from attending as many lessons per week as you can commit to.

Once you sign up for the beginner course, you will get a membership card for 10 lessons—unlike in shops, our membership cards do not expire so you can reclaim your remaining slots whenever you can.

Improver/technique level

The improver and technique level is a progression from the complete beginners' level course and takes place straight after the beginner lesson. This level covers a lot of general technique, as well as all the basic patterns that will enable you to start dancing socially with confidence. We will continue exploring the walk, improving navigational skills, the embrace, musicality, as well as starting to introduce pivoting and other new and exciting elements.

This is a circular level, meaning that all topics will be repeated cyclically over time, to ensure that all students are exposed to and have opportunity to learn all the material.

The improver/technique level is also another opportunity for more advanced students, of any level, to go over the basics, gaining more insight into the details of Tango technique.

This programme of classes covers all the basic moves that are suitable for anyone aiming to dance socially as soon as possible.

Once you sign up for the improver/technique level, you will get a membership card for 10 lessons—unlike in shops, our membership cards do not expire so you can reclaim your remaining slots whenever you can.

The improver/technique level consists of 10 lessons that take place every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:45–8:45pm, at The Union Tavern, near Clerkenwell.

Workshops

Special workshops

We hold special workshops with guest teachers on occasional Sunday afternoons. These workshops are not generally suitable for the beginner, as they do not teach the basic steps and directions of Tango, but rather concentrate on the exploration of a particular concept. This is a great way to improve specific technique related to that narrow topic (as opposed to general technique, concentrating on Tango as a whole). After every workshop we have a practica for two hours, facilitating your practice outside a class environment, without the intimidation of a crowded dance floor of a milonga.

You can read more about our workshops, where and when they take place and their costs on the special events page.

Private Classes

The progression is generally much faster in private classes because you have the teacher's full attention, and will be corrected exactly as necessary (to find out more about private lessons, follow this private lesson FAQ), allowing you to correct mistakes before they turn into bad habits so you can concentrate on learning more.

It is often said, by different authorities, that 'un-learning' or correcting a bad habit takes anywhere from 50 correct repetitions to 21 days of correcting, but this ultimately depends on the individual, and there is no rule as such. What is known is that for any new habit to form, you have to develop the neurological pathways, also termed as 'muscle memory', which only happens through many repetitions of the correct action. For some references on correcting bad habits on the Internet, follow these links: [1], [2].

You can read more about private classes, where they take place and their costs on the private classes page.
